What is an EIN and why does 10DLC need it?

EIN
An EIN, or Employer Identification Number, is a free 9-digit federal tax ID from the IRS, written like 12-3456789. Standard 10DLC brands register with it, and providers check that your legal business name matches your IRS documents exactly, such as the CP 575 notice or 147C letter. Businesses without an EIN may use the sole proprietor path.

Definition: An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a 9-digit federal tax identification number the IRS assigns to businesses and other entities.

Your EIN helps confirm that your business is real. When you register a standard brand, your provider sends your legal name and tax ID to The Campaign Registry. If the two do not line up with IRS records, your brand can come back unverified.

What do providers say about the EIN?

Provider Rule
Twilio legal name must match EIN documents exactly (CP 575 or 147C, error 30918); register any DBA with the brand
Plivo company name and EIN must exactly match the tax document, for example "Yourbusiness, Inc." not "Yourbusiness"
SignalWire each brand should have a unique EIN; an unverified brand can appeal with the IRS CP 575
Twilio (toll-free) business registration number required for new toll-free verifications since Feb 17, 2026, except sole proprietors

How do I avoid EIN mismatches?

  1. Find your CP 575 or 147C letter.
  2. Copy the legal name exactly, including "Inc." or "LLC."
  3. If you use a trade name, register it as a DBA with your brand.
  4. Show the same names on your website.

Twilio notes a brand new tax ID can take 30 to 90 days to appear in validation databases.

Why it matters for your website

Reviewers compare your site to your brand record. If your website shows a name that does not connect to your legal name, that can trigger a mismatch rejection. See brand name match.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an EIN?

You apply with the IRS, and it is free, so never pay a fee for one. The IRS says an online application gives you the number right away if approved, fax takes about 4 business days, and mail takes about 4 weeks.

What if my EIN is brand new and fails 10DLC verification?

Twilio says new tax IDs can take 30 to 90 days to show up in validation databases. If your brand comes back unverified, TCR allows corrections, resubmission, or an appeal with documents.
